At Bay State Community Services, we continuously strive to be a culturally and linguistically responsive agency. We are committed to respectful care that full supports the cultural health beliefs, practices, and preferred languages of the people we serve.
We wholeheartedly believe that being culturally responsive is a continuous and dynamic learning process. Therefore, we embrace the concept of cultural humility in which all staff take the time to learn, challenge oneself, maintain our humility, recognize institutional racism, prejudice and bias as well as question our own individual belief systems so that we are actively addressing racism and bias in all of our work.

Staff Commitments to Diversity and How We Work Together
Bay State Community Services is committed to cultural humility – the understanding that learning about people who make up the world and their life experiences is a never-ending process.
We want to move from the concepts of competency or proficiency toward a humble approach. To that end we strive to attain the following commitments:
- Transparency Speak specifically and clarify language you use (refrain from acronyms)
- Uplift and encourage each other through our blind spots
- Show up as your genuine self even during discomfort
- Build and maintain trust
- Calling in vs. Calling out
- Recognize that we may share a mission and workplace, but not the same cultural experiences or perspectives
- Impact vs. Intention
- Vulnerability is welcomed and highly encouraged
- These agreements will be revisited frequently to ensure that they are meeting the agencies needs.
Cultivating Cultural Humility at Bay State Community Services
The Foundation of Cultural Humility
Cultural humility is an ongoing process of self-reflection and self-critique whereby the individual examines their own biases, assumptions, and values. It requires a commitment to lifelong learning and a willingness to be vulnerable. This means moving beyond a superficial understanding of different cultures to a deeper, more respectful engagement with the communities we serve.
This approach is essential for building trust, fostering effective partnerships, and ultimately, promoting health equity. By centering cultural humility, we can ensure practices are relevant, respectful, and responsive to the diverse needs of the populations we aim to support.
Three Pillars of Practice:
Self-Reflection
- Introspection: Regularly examine your own beliefs, biases, prejudices, and assumptions about different cultural groups.
- Awareness: Understand how your personal history, identity, and experiences shape your perceptions and interactions.
- Openness to Learning: Be willing to acknowledge what you don’t know and actively seek to learn from others’ lived experiences.
Accountability
- Responsibility: Take ownership of your actions and their impact on individuals and communities.
- Learning from Mistakes: View errors as opportunities for growth and improvement, not as failures.
- Community Engagement: Actively solicit feedback from community members and be prepared to make changes based on their input.
Power Imbalances
- Recognition: Acknowledge the historical & systemic power differentials that exist between healthcare providers/professionals & the communities they serve.
- Mitigation: Strive to create equitable relationships by redistributing power and ensuring community voices are central to decision-making.
- Advocacy: Confront oppressive systems. When promoting policies, it’s essential to prioritize the communities most affected, ensuring they are at the center of all initiatives and actively engaged in the process, while also confirming that these communities desire those policies.
