CEO Daurice Cox, PsyD.
Like the spring weather in New England, there is a lot of unpredictability in the social services landscape. While we don’t know what is on the horizon, we do know that in Massachusetts, social services and the critical work we do are greatly valued and appreciated. During these unsettled times, we especially appreciate your support of Bay State Community Services and of our mission to strengthen communities.
This month, we invite you to:
- Learn more about the Dianne DeVanna Center, in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month,
- Read about our impact on the community, and
- Mark your calendars for a special event—our first annual Theresa’s Walk.
With Gratitude,
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
Program Spotlight: Dianne DeVanna Center
In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, we are highlighting Bay State Community Services’ Dianne DeVanna Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. The Dianne DeVanna Center was founded in 1978 after 11-year-old Dianne DeVanna lost her life to family violence. It currently has two locations in Braintree and Plymouth (DeVanna South).
This DCF funded program was formed to provide intensive, non-judgmental, and responsive supports to parents/caretakers/guardians who are experiencing parenting challenges. The dedicated staff at the Dianne DeVanna Center understand the pressures, stressors, and frustrations of parenting and provide practical, hands-on, intensive, and goal-oriented supports so that families can live and grow together.
Parent Aides work with families supported by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and as a team they are committed to providing parenting skills, education on child(ren) development needs, and assisting parents in working towards reunification when needed.

Many of the families struggle to make ends meet, many live in poverty. Your charitable gift to the Dianne DeVanna Center directly assists the children and families served with urgent, emergency needs. Together we are strengthening communities through resources, support, education, and connections.
Impact on our Community
Joanne’s* Story:
*This narrative is a retelling of a personal story, with modifications made to names and details to protect the individual’s identity.
I found out I was pregnant at a very difficult time in my life. The hospital contacted DCF because there was cocaine present in my baby’s system. The day after I gave birth, I woke up to my sister crying and telling me that she was taking my baby home with her because DCF was going to put him into foster care if she did not. Our DCF worker told us about a program, hosted by Bay State Community Services, where we could be connected with a Parent Aide (PA). I gladly accepted and I am so grateful that I did!
Four, long, sober months later, the court granted us custody of our baby boy!
Today we are doing better than ever! We are working hard on our recovery – drug free for more than 10 months – and we are doing great in our home. We have learned so much about working with our baby to help him to learn and grow. He is doing amazingly! Every day I find myself applying things I learned from our PA.
