Many of you know that one of my favorite stories is Loren Eiseley’s 1969 piece The Starfish. I’ve kept a copy in every office since I began this work. In times of “storms,” I find myself returning to it as a reminder of why we do what we do.
The story goes…
There was a young girl walking along a beach upon which thousands of starfish had been washed up during a terrible storm. When she came to each starfish, she
would pick it up and throw it back into the ocean. People watched her with amusement.
She had been doing this for some time when a man approached her and said, “Little girl, why are you doing this? Look at this beach! You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!”
The girl seemed crushed, suddenly deflated. But after a few moments, she bent down, picked up another starfish, and hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied,
“Well, I made a difference for that one!”

Program Spotlight: Dorchester-Mattapan Family Resource Center
Bay State Community Services hosts the Dorchester-Mattapan Family Resource Center (DM-FRC), located in Mattapan, MA. The DM-FRC is a free community-based service that is designed to be a single point of entry for families with children under the age of 18 (including parents, guardians, grandparents, caregivers, youth, and family members) to access behavioral health supports, community services, resources, and information.
At the DM-FRC, we understand the many challenges of parenting and the complexity of the many systems your family may be involved with including schools, Social Services, State Agencies, and the Court System. Our goal is to help you, and your family identify what would be helpful to your family. Based on your needs, our knowledgeable and dedicated staff will help you with referrals, services, and supports.
Every family has different needs and, depending on your needs, we offer three levels of support:
- Assessments and Family Support Planning
- Resources and Referrals
- Groups, Community Events & Activities
Services Offered*:
- Parent Education Groups
- Peer-to-Peer Groups (for youth & adults)
- Information and Assistance (for families needing access to health, safety, employment training, education, & recovery supports)
- Cultural, Social, and Recreational Events (for families & youth)
*We offer most of our programming and services in Haitian-Creole and Spanish for families with limited English language skills. Our parenting education classes and supports are sensitive to unique needs of new arrival and immigrant families. We connect families to free English classes and general immigration support through our partnership with HAPHI.
