Prevention in Early Childhood

Diverse happy family at home

The Prevention in Early Childhood Workgroup is a part of the Impact Quincy Coalition.

We are a collaborative advisory group of community partners, established in 2021, with an overall goal of increasing protective factors in early childhood.

Our mission is to enhance equitable access to protective factors and services for families through expanded awareness and collaboration with families, providers, and community leaders, and to develop preventative strategies that respect and address the unique cultural needs of our community.

This initiative utilizes the Strategic Planning Framework Model that includes Parent(s)/Caregiver(s), Schools, Recovery Oriented Systems of Care, Law Enforcement, Religious Organization, Businesses, Media, Civic/Volunteer Corps, Health Care, State, Local, Tribal Organizations and Child Serving Organizations in assessing, understanding, and addressing the needs of families with young children.

The Prevention in Early Childhood has two important components including

  • A vibrant and active Early Childhood Workgroup that meets regularly to enhance prevention capacity and infrastructure and hosts various community events and capacity building activities.
  • Implementing an evidence-based intervention, Strengthening Families Program, that supports the needs of families.

Learn more about our Strengthening Families Program

  • Each evening session starts out with a family dinner (provided by the program) where we all sit down together for a meal. Families and group leaders chat and get to know each other.
  • Then parents and the 3-5 year olds follow the Child’s Group Leaders to a separate room where the children are led through their own curriculum that focuses on listening skills, communication, social skills, feelings, problem solving and more.
  • Parents spend time together with the Parent Group Leaders following their own curriculum, which includes child development, influencing behavior, communication, family meetings, problem solving, setting limits, and behavior programs. Each parent or couple gets their own SFP workbook.
  • Then everyone returns to the large room to spend time practicing the skills they learned through a family activity.
